Serving those who work in Parliament and Government

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.’ (1 Tim 2: 1-7)

We feel strongly that God has been saying for us to take seriously Paul’s instruction to pray, intercede and give thanks for all those in positions of power. Opportunities are occurring to serve and pray for those working in Parliament and to encourage churches to see politics and government as a mission field. We attend a weekly bible study aimed at those working in parliament and an intercessory prayer meeting. The 2009 Week of Prayer for Parliament and Government

We were involved in the daily prayer walks taking place around the Houses of Parliament,
times of worship and prayer ‘surgeries’ open to anyone working in
Parliament to receive prayer. There was a wonderful sense of unity as Christians from within and outside of Parliament and Government came together to worship and pray.

In 2009 Week of Prayer, the Lord was saying :
  • to perservere in prayer - it will bear fruit
  • to pray for and encourage young Christians to stand at the next election
  • His justice will prevail
Come and hear what the Lord is saying about the nation in 2010 !

Report on 2010 Week of Prayer for Parliament and Government

During the 7th annual Week of Prayer for Parliament and Government, all the YWAM Notting Hill staff and DTS students were able to join in prayer walks around the Houses of Parliament and up Whitehall where many government departments are located. We also prayed inside Parliament for our national leaders, Christians in the government and some new Christian MPs.

And our artists spent the morning drawing and painting prophetically in Victoria Gardens next to the House of Lords.

The week continued with more prayer walks, prayer surgeries and a prayer service led by Jonathan Oloyede, leader of the Global Day of Prayer in London. It finished with a service of Praise and Celebration with friends from Christians in Government and a chance to pray for key people involved in Christians in Parliament and Christians in Government.

A strong theme in the images that people received and in the prophetic art was of a flood of water gushing through Parliament. This could signify cleansing, baptism, the Holy Spirit amongst other things. Cleansing would fit in with the large intake of new MPs at the last election.

And throughout the past year, the Lord has been reminding us that He has been and still is shaking the foundations of Parliament, with the "removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our "God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12: 26-29).

And so we knew we had to come in humility for "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land"( 2 Chronicles 7:14). We held onto the promise that He would hear us and deliver us just as He promised those in exile in Babylon: "Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity" (Jeremiah 29:12,13).

With many expectations placed on the new coalition government and political philosophies such as the Conservatives' 'Big Society', we felt to heed the warning of idolatry, trusting too much in man's ideas. For "Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain" (this verse from Psalm 127:1 is actually engraved in the floor of the Central Lobby in Parliament - see picture above). Christ alone is to be the foundation stone.

People felt led to pray for the children of the nation and a spirit of prolife, for boldness in submission for MPs and for continual granting of forgiveness for the wrong doings in the expenses scandal.

We also prayed for the Lord to raise up a God-fearing Prime Minister, for young people to become engaged in politics, and for the Body of Christ to speak with one voice in the political arena. Jonathan Oloyede encouraged us by declaring that each prayer arrives in God's 'inbox' like an email and receives His personal attention so none go astray.

Our prayer walks usually end up in the shadow of the Tower of Big Ben. Traditionally, the words that accompany the chimes are as follows :

All through this hour
Lord, be my guide
And by Thy power
No foot shall slide

Whenever you see this famous landmark, please do say a prayer for all those working nearby that the Lord will indeed guide them and keep them from temptation. Thank you.

Be part of a move of prayer for this country. Wherever you are. Whoever you are...
